How many Womag Writers are there?

So how many times have we Womag Writers said of late, ‘There’s SO MUCH EXCELLENT COMPETITION out there!’? Well this post is SIMPLE. I’m trying to find out exactly HOW MUCH - although I have a long way to go!

At the moment the list below is FAR from complete – a drop in the ocean of short story writers – but I’ll be updating it each time I get a moment. Plus, rather like a RSPB bird check – I need your help to finish it - Please!

So do please let me know (either by commenting below, or emailing me - address is on my profile) if:

1. You write short stories for Women’s Magazines or know someone who does.
2. Whether you have been published.
3. Whether you are at double star status! (Over 10 fiction sales) triple star status (over 30 fiction sales) quadruple star status (over 50 fiction sales) quintuple star status(over 100 fiction sales.
4. If you would like your name linked to your blog.

Finally, if your name is on the list and you would prefer it not to be - do let me know.

Later addition to this blog post: If you enjoy psychological thrillers my debut novel Her Last Lie (published by HQ Digital/Harper Collins) is out now, with all royalties for downloads going to Cancer Research UK. It can be downloadeHERE   I hope you read, and enjoy it. :o) Thank you.

This is a terrific idea, Amanda.

Congratulations on the award - I nominated you, too, so you're a doubly beautiful blogger.

Amanda said...

Thanks Suz :-)

Ooh, I didn't realise you'd nominated me too - that will teach me not to keep up with everyone's blog regularly - I must catch up with everyone today! XX

What a brilliant idea. I'll be fascinated to see how long a list you eventually come up with.

Colette McCormick said...

Great idea.

Amanda said...

Hi Helen - There are a lot of us, aren't there! Scary!

Thanks Colette :-)

DJ Kirkby said...

This is a really great idea, well done for coming up with it.

DAB said...

WOW! What a list! How's the novel coming on Ms Allsorts ?

Rebecca Holmes said...

Rebecca Holmes *
I've have emailed but didn't have details :)

Amanda said...

Thanks DJ :-)

It's getting there TF - been up since 5.30am, working on it! Almost at 50,000 words of the final edit! :-))

Thanks Rebecca, I will add your name to the list :-) I should have said, my email is on my profile page.

Unknown said...

Oh my goodness, what a long list! And I have lots of stars by my name - which obviously means I'm very, very old. :o)

Oh, and my last short story came back for two re-writes. Sheesh. You'd have thought I'd have got the hang of it by now. :o)

Keep up the good work!

Amanda said...

I know, Shirley - scary isn't it? And it's by no means complete. I think we need a special category of stars for the amazing amount you've sold!

Cheryl said...

Great idea, and makes it all the more special when your story is picked when there are so many womag writers out there compared to markets.

Feel free to add my name and link my blog. I'm not published as you know.... but hopefully one day.

Sherri said...

Gosh, that makes me feel famous! I'm at 'four stars' at the moment but live in hope.

You can add Jill Steeples (at least four stars), Lily Forester and Leigh Forbes.

There are always new names whenever I pick up a magazine, which does mean the competition is increasing all the time, but the good thing is it keeps us all on our toes and lets us know that we have to produce good work if we want to succeed.

So good luck to everyone - I love reading all your stories.

Anonymous said...

I just read Emails from the Edge :o)

Amanda said...

Four stars is brilliant, Bernadette, well done you! :-) And thanks for the updates.

Did you enjoy it Captain Black? :-)

Anonymous said...

The kitchen disasters were hilarious.

Amanda said...

Ahhhh, it's all fallen into place now, Captain Black. :-))
I actually can't claim credit for the Writers' Forum version of 'Emails from the Edge.' I didn't write it! Very strange though, as Amanda Brittany is such an unusual name - and to have two of us in the same issue, seems incredibly odd! - Plus the £100 would have been nice!
:-)

Karen said...

What a good idea! I had no idea there were so many and probably lots more out there :o)

Caroline said...

FWIW you can add me if you like! I write as Caroline Storer - no sales yet - but then I only subbed my first ever short story last week to Take a Break - Fiction Feast! And blinky blimey I never realised the competition was so fierce! Caroline x

Amanda said...

Yes, Karen - I think there are a lot more - I'm adding people daily! :-)

Thanks, Caroline, and good luck with your sub!! :-)

Shirley said...

Please add my name to your list. I've published just under fifty stories, but am hoping to pass that amount this year!

http://cleverchronicles.blogspot.com

Queenie said...

Fascinating! I think Helen Hunt is a two-star womag writer - I've just checked on her blog and she seems to have 10 fiction womag sales under her belt.

Amanda said...

Thanks for the update, Shirley - I will add you to the list :-)

Thanks Queenie, I'll update Helen immediately! :-)

Jan Jones said...

Hi Amanda,

I'm Jan Jones and I've sold 4 novels, 1 serial and not-quite-100 short stories to women's magazines

Amanda said...

Thanks for the update, Jan. And congrats on all those successes!

Quillers said...

Wow, what a list! I was sure mine must be wrong, in that I didn't think I'd sold that many, but I've just done a count up on my website listings and I have.

It is great to see so many of us doing it too. Womag writers are taking over the world!

Quillers said...

Just to add Mandy that I think Linda Lewis will be well over one star. She also writes as Catherine Howard, and often has two or three stories in a TAB/FF at one time.

Her website is here though it doesn't give a lot of details of how much she's had published. http://akacatherinehoward.weebly.com/index.html

Amanda said...

Hi Sally - I did get your star rating from your website :-))

And I think we may just be taking over the world - I think that would make a good episode for Doctor Who.

Also thanks for the update on Linda Lewis/Catherine Howard, much appreciated. :-)

Quillers said...

It just surprised me, Amanda, even though I am supposed to be keeping score myself. It's amazing that a year or two ago I wouldn't have even warranted the one star, and suddenly I'm up to three. It brings it home how fortunate I have been, seeing it in black and white like that.

Unknown said...

Hi Amanda - how hard you must have worked compiling this!! At the last count, though, I have sold 54 stories - 5 yet to appear (next couple of months). I worked hard for them and it's just a matter of pride!!! Thank you, Sarah England

Amanda said...

It's such a great achievement, in such a short time Sally - you're an inspiration!

Hi Sarah, thanks for updating me - I've updated your stars! 54 sales is amazing! Well Done! :-)

Camilla said...

Hi Amanda,

This is a great idea. I'd love to be added to the list - I write as Camilla Kelly and I've had about 25 stories published

Amanda said...

Thanks Camilla. I'm so glad the majority of people seem pleased with the idea!

Susan Wright said...

Hi Amanda,

What a great idea. Can you give me four asterisks, please? I've sold 81 stories to date.
Thanks very much

Susan Wright

Amanda said...

Wow, 81!

Thanks, Susan for letting me know, I'll update you now.

Elaine Everest said...

A brilliant idea and well done for compiling it!

I can give you my name as well as some of my womag writing/published students:

Elaine Everest***
Catherine Burrows*
Francesca Burgess*
June Crowe*
Ann West*
Gerry Savill*
Lucy Alton*
Christine Webb*
Angela Johnson*

Amanda said...

Thank you Elaine! :-))

Cathos said...

Hi - I'm Cathy Sibley - sold over 10 mainly to TAB/FF but also Best (sadly fiction slot gone); Weekly News and People's Friend. Another good blog to start following as a result of Womag blog. I shall look forward to it.

Amanda said...

Thanks Cathy. Yes, a real shame we lost Best!

Sue Moorcroft said...

How lovely that I'm on the list! Thank you.

My blog is http://suemoorcroft.wordpress.com

Sheila Norton said...

Hi Amanda. Sheila Norton here, but appearing under my other name (Olivia Ryan is my Novelist pseudonym). Your list is a great idea! Thank you for putting me on the list - how nice to know someone had heard of me!! I've actually sold over 100 stories in my (long) career, so I guess that makes me a quadruple-star - how exciting! And I'd love to have my blog linked. It's written as Olivia Ryan - at http://oliviaryanblogspot.blogspot.com . Thanks again!

Amanda said...

Thanks for updating me, Sue and Sheila, I've updated your names. :-)

Sarah Duncan said...

Hi Amanda I'm not sure if I should count as a * or a ** - I had a few published before I started writing novels about 8 years ago, and I've had a few published since so I'm an ** overall, but * for each stage. But hopefully more to come - I've got one coming up in the new Woman's Own Fiction Feast.

And I'd love a link to my blog www.sarahduncansblog.blogspot.com

Thanks!

Amanda said...

Thanks, Sarah. I consider you have ** - I will pop you on the list now. Many congratulations on your sale. :-)

Kath McGurl said...

Only 4 blokes on the list! I thought there'd be a few more. Though it is possibly some men write under female psuedonyms.

Helen said...

Hi Amanda,
Helen Lowry here. I've had a story published in The Weekly News and would love to be included on your list.
Thanks.

Amanda said...

Yes, just the 4, Womag - I thought there would be more too - but like you say, they may write under pseudonyms.

Thanks Helen - I will pop you on!

penandpaints said...

Hi Amanda
Great idea! It's going to be a long list!

Amanda said...

Thanks, Pen and Paints. I wonder if there is a limit to the size of a blog post! :-O Yikes!

Jen said...

You can add me if you like though I feel something of a fraud since I've only this week started subbing. I'm writing the stories though, oh yes I am!

Er... I think you already know what my name is :)

Amanda said...

I will add you right now, Jen! :-) x

Rena George said...

Heavens!...so many of us. All that competition out there - and you're all probably absolutely brilliant. Not that I'm minding the competition - well actually, I am. I just tell lies.

Won't it be great though, when we are struggling with a story that's not going where it should, to check out your datebase of fellow writers, Amanda, and know that we are not alone.

Wonderful idea. Thanks for this.

Here's my bit:

I took up fiction writing for the first time in 2008 – and can’t believe I didn’t start this sooner. I really love writing short stories, and in my first year of submitting to mags I have been lucky enough to have stories accepted and multiples published in People’s Friend, Take a Break, Take a Break Fiction Feast. I have also sold to Australian magazine Woman’s Day and The Weekly News.
Recently been having a break from short fiction to finish first draft of my first crime novel.

Amanda said...

I know, Rena, the list is endless - and I'm sure I've only just begun!

Thanks for your bit :-) I will add you to the list - great achievements!

montyandrosie said...

Great idea!

I write as Susan Alison and claim two stars.

Could you link it through to my artwork blog, please - at www.MontyandRosie.blogspot.com

Monty and Rosie are Border Collies.

Thank you very much!

Amanda said...

Thanks Susan, I will add you the very long list! :-)

Deb Rickard said...

Hi Amanda,

I have just had my first short story published by People's Friend.

Deborah Rickard

Amanda said...

Ooh, congrats, Deborah - I'll add you to the list! :-)

Deb Rickard said...

Thanks Amanda; it's a fantastic feeling and now I feel fantastic to see my name amongst so many nobles!

I've had four sales to Woman's Weekly (unless serials count as multiple sales).

Jenna Wallace

Amanda said...

Thanks for letting me know, Jenna. I will pop you on now! :-)

Kath McGurl said...

Hello again! Put me up to 3 stars would you? Also, I met Linda Povey today who needs 4 stars - wow! and Adam Millward who's a 5 star.

Kath McGurl said...

Should have added, I'm K McG on your list!

Amanda said...

Thanks for the update Womag - will amend now. :-)

Anonymous said...

Ooh, I am honoured to find myself on this list (Helen Yendall) as a 'tbc'. Please take this as confirmation and give me two stars please (hoping to go up a notch very soon!)
Although we are effectively in competition with each other, I think there's a real 'community spirit' amongst Womag writers, so it's lovely to see so many of the names listed - many of which I recognise. It's like a roll of honour.
I am having the most success at the moment with Woman's Weekly (after years of trying!) but TAB is still eluding me! Well done to those of you who are regulars for that magazine! The pay's better than a lot of the other mags too.
Great idea, Amanda!

Amanda said...

Thanks for dropping by Helen - always great to meet another fellow womag writer. And I agree whole-heartedly about the 'community spirit'.

I've never cracked WW - so really well done. I've been trying them for about a year too. I did have a lovely letter saying they liked one particular story and my style - but that's as far as I've got. It will be a champagne day when I finally crack them. As for TAB - well I can't even chink their armour!

I will pop on you stars right now. :-)

Anonymous said...

Amanda
That means you are 'very near' so don't give up! I got a letter saying they liked one of my stories and style (but it was a 'well worn theme') and the very next story I sent them... they accepted. They don't say they like you unless they really do, so keep going with WW!
And thanks for my stars!
Helen

Amanda said...

Thanks Helen,

I still keep getting them out there to WW - and some seem to take ages to be rejected - but still the rejections keep coming, unfortunately. I will be cracking open the champagne if they ever buy something of mine. :-))

Karen said...

Gulp. I've just noticed how long the list has got ...

Lovely to be part of the gang though :o)

Amanda said...

I know, Karen - and I'm sure there are lots more lovely womag writers out there - I need to update it a bit more after Christmas, I think.

:-)

Joanne said...

Not ready to be added to your list yet but *gulp* what competition/potential comradeship already! Please could you all write about different issues to me? Maybe we could staggering sending off our submissions so as not to inundate commissioning eds?!

Amanda said...

Yes, there's a lot of us, Monzegirl - and probably quite a few more that I haven't got on my list yet - plus those who are attempting to crack the market! Scary! :-)

Diane Fordham said...

Wow.. that is some list you have there! I would like to congratulate you on all your writing success..WELL DONE! I love writing for magazines, and nothing makes me more happy than an acceptance of one of my short stories, eases the pains of rejection. I have had just over 50 short stories published in magazines. That's Life, here in Australia, is my favourite (that could have something to do with the fact that they have bought most of my short stories, lol). Happy writing.... Diane Fordham

Amanda said...

Hello Diane,

Thank you for dropping by, I will add you to the list - and many congratulations on all your sales. :-)

Diane Fordham said...

Thank you so much Amanda. I was thrilled to see myself being included in such good company. Lovely to see some familiar names that I have come across in the magazines and was thinking what a great list to help me acquaint myself with other writers. I have been enjoying reading the variety of Blogs. Feeling quite happy at the moment. Thanks for that. x

CekaTB said...

Eh up, Amanda, can I have another star please? I've now sold 50 stories and would like to see four against my name up there (points up to list)
PS whatever the thingy says, I'm Celia K Andrew, but I'm such an ickymuff at techystuff that I think this will come through as CekaTB and I've no idea how to change it. Bassetts.

Amanda said...

Wow! Congratulations, Celia - I'll pop another star on right this minute! :-))

Paula RC said...

Wow I've got a lot of catching up to do before I appear on your list. Darn, People's Friend who like my stories alot but I just can't crack their market enough to recieve an acceptance. Oh mmm, back to my keyboard and just keep on trying :-)

Had to smile my word verification was PLEAS hopeful People's Friend hear mine :-)

Morgen With An E said...

Although he's better known for his crime / thriller novels, Adrian Magson has sold some woman stories.

Amanda said...

Thanks Morgen, I'll add him to the list.

Anonymous said...

Hi Amanda,
I love your list! What a great idea. Please can you add me - I've sold to People's Friend, Yours, The Weekly News and Woman's Weekly but don't quite earn a double star yet! ;-)
Jenny

Frances Garrood said...

Hi, Amanda. I'm most impressed with your research! As for me, I know I'm in well into the hundreds, but never actually counted them up. Wish I had, now...

TracyFells said...

Hi Amanda, I've just popped over from Wendy Clarke's blog where she mentioned this wall of womag fame. I have sold 2 stories so could I be added on here with 1 star?
Would be chuffed to be listed along with such a talented bunch of writers.
